Water

We are in the midst of planning a trip to Cyanika for September 2011 to bring a rainwater harvesting system to two local schools. These will be in conjunction with nutrition training and a community vegetable garden to incorporate nutritional education into the schools’ curriculum. We are very excited since this may be a first in the country! Cost estimates are around 150 USD or more for each 500 liter (132 gallon) collection system. We will also be showing locals how to build smaller systems for individual families or collectives.

Why is this necessary? Simply put, most Rwandans don’t have running water. Many spend several hours a day walking to collect water from local sources. Rainwater is readily available throughout the year (especially in Rwanda) and is the cleanest source of water in the world! Cleaner water will help prevent disease and sickness. Having quick access to clean water makes a tremendous difference in the amount of time and effort of just getting through the day.
