Over 60% of the population is under 25 years of age. Rwanda’s Vision 2020 stated that illiteracy is rampant both amongst the urban and the rural population with 48% of Rwandans unable to read and write. Apart from raising the general welfare of the population, improvements in education can be used to build a productive and efficient workforce further helping the people escape the bondage of poverty.
The children see the schools… but they know they can’t go.
The children in the village see the schools, but they know they can’t go. Not because there’s a lack of room or teachers, but because they don’t have the financial resources. Education is free, ostensibly, in Rwanda. But schools require uniforms, books etc. which the children or their parents cannot afford. All children, everywhere deserve the opportunity to reach their potential and an education is key to that.
Village Makeover is responding to this need, but has a long way to go. We have 32 children enrolled in school and we are committed to seeing these children receive a full education from the time they enter until the time they graduate. When these children were selected our strategy included some children who were older. They are the next generation about ot enter the working world and without an education the cycle of poverty would continue for many years to come.
There are so many more that need our help, we have orphans, children with one parent, many living below the poverty line and a generation about to enter their wage earning years with no education or skills.
Learn how you can give a child hope by sponsoring their education!.
There are also opportunities for teaching and developing curriculum for English, reading, writing, life skills, marriage, medical, pastoral, business & leadership training.
